Abelardo de la Espriella secures UN Security Council vote on JEP mandate
Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has successfully advocated for a modification to the United Nations verification mission regarding the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP). The UN Security Council approved the proposal with 15 votes in favor, adjusting the competencies of the JEP and the role of international bodies in implementing the 2016 peace agreement with the FARC.
Under the new arrangement, the UN will focus its verification efforts on the reintegration of former combatants and security guarantees. The Colombian government will retain sole responsibility for implementing integral rural reforms. Former President Álvaro Uribe expressed support for the move, noting that it reaffirms national sovereignty by ensuring the government manages rural reform independently.
