Santa Marta police commander removed after mass prison escape

A mass escape of 41 detainees from the Centro de Traslado por Protección in Santa Marta has triggered significant security changes in Colombia. The escape occurred following an internal riot and unrest at the facility. Authorities are currently searching for 37 fugitives, including high-profile individuals such as alias ‘Mongolo’, a financial leader of the Autodefensas Conquistadoras de la Sierra Nevada (ACSN), and alias ‘El Guajiro’, who is linked to the murder of a police officer.

In response to the incident, President Abelardo de la Espriella ordered the removal of the Santa Marta Metropolitan Police Commander, Colonel Yeison López, citing a lack of timely reporting and failure to respond to road blockades. Colonel Jimmy Belalcázar is expected to take over the command, with Colonel Urriago serving as temporary commander in the interim.

Separately, the President addressed an attack on two INPEC guards, Shirly Dallana Acosta Marroquín and Daniel Steven Tapiero Alférez, at the El Bosque prison in Barranquilla. Despite threats directed at the President, the Minister of Justice, and prison officials, De la Espriella affirmed that the government will continue the transfer of inmates and will not be intimidated by criminal organizations.
