India's youth-led 'Cockroach' protests pressure Modi over exams and jobs
Youth-led demonstrations organized by the online Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) began in July over a NEET exam paper leak. The protests forced Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to resign on July 25 and spread nationwide, expanding to broader grievances about unemployment, the cost of living and concerns over the Modi government's perceived authoritarianism.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded by creating a high‑powered reform task force headed by Nandan Nilekani, raising penalties for exam paper leaks and dropping many cases against protesters. The movement also highlighted the use of AI‑powered surveillance cameras and internet shutdowns during the protests.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke launched an online petition urging Modi to address youth concerns—education, unemployment and cost of living—in his Independence Day speech. He later called on the BJP to heed RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s advice not to label protesting Gen Z as anti‑national and demanded the removal of a police sub‑inspector assigned to his home security detail, alleging rude behavior and improper monitoring.
