Abiy Ahmed sworn in for second term as Ethiopia Prime Minister
Ethiopia’s parliament has inaugurated a new legislative term with several high-profile appointments and structural changes. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was sworn in for a second five-year term following a decisive victory by his Prosperity Party, which secured 438 seats in the June elections. The re-election has received congratulations from the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
In a historic move, the House of Peoples’ Representatives elected Ahmed Shide, the former Finance Minister, as Speaker. Shide is the first ethnic Somali to lead the country’s lower legislative chamber. Additionally, Muferiat Kamil was elected Speaker of the House of Federation, the upper chamber. The parliament also approved a bill to restructure several federal ministries, including renaming the Ministry of Planning and Development to the Ministry of National Strategy and the Ministry of Transport and Logistics to the Ministry of Logistics.
As he begins his new mandate, Prime Minister Abiy has emphasized Ethiopia’s pursuit of maritime access to the Red Sea, a move that continues to be a point of regional tension. The new term begins amid ongoing political and security challenges, including disputes over election participation in certain regions and internal conflicts.
