Ethiopian federal and regional leadership transitions
Overview
Following the re-election of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the Ethiopian government underwent several leadership transitions. Abiy Ahmed was sworn in for a second five-year term after his Prosperity Party secured 438 seats in the June elections. This re-election received congratulations from the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
During the inauguration of the new legislative term, the House of Peoples' Representatives elected Ahmed Shide, the former Finance Minister, as Speaker, making him the first ethnic Somali to hold the position. Additionally, Muferiat Kamil was elected Speaker of the House of Federation. The parliament also approved restructuring several federal ministries, such as renaming the Ministry of Planning and Development to the Ministry of National Strategy.
In the Somali Regional State, Mustafe Mohamud Omar began a second term as President. Following his swearing-in and the inauguration of a cabinet composed of both returning officials and new appointees, Mustafe issued a congratulatory message to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Mustafe credited the Prime Minister’s administration with transitioning the region from conflict and repression toward stability, political freedom, and economic development, specifically noting progress in federalism, religious freedom, and security-sector reforms.
As the new mandate begins, Prime Minister Abiy has emphasized Ethiopia’s pursuit of maritime access to the Red Sea, a priority that remains a point of regional tension amid ongoing internal political and security challenges.
