Abruzzo Alpine Rescue Saves Hikers on Gran Sasso and Maiella

On July 11, the Abruzzo Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps carried out three separate rescues in the region’s mountains. Two hikers, a 31‑year‑old man and a 46‑year‑old man from Lazio, were stranded on the old Sentiero Geologico in the Valle dell’Inferno area of Gran Sasso. An emergency helicopter retrieved them safely without injury and they were taken away from the terrain.

At the same time the corps responded to two incidents on the Maiella massif. In Valle dell’Orfento near Caramanico Terme, a 69‑year‑old man from Pescara slipped and suffered a shoulder trauma; he was hoisted by helicopter to a hospital in Chieti. Near Corno Piccolo on the Ventricini trail, a 51‑year‑old woman from Puglia sprained her ankle and was likewise evacuated by air to a hospital in Teramo. Both operations involved CNSAS technical staff and 118 medical teams.

The rescues highlight the growing summer traffic on Abruzzo’s mountain paths and the importance of proper equipment, up‑to‑date trail information, and rapid emergency response.
