Abruzzo farmers press region to enforce anti‑African swine fever wild boar control plan

The Italian Farmers' Union (CIA) in Abruzzo has sent two official requests – one to the regional government and another to the managers of national and regional parks – urging immediate implementation of Ordinance No. 5/2026 and the 2026‑2028 National Action Plan against African swine fever (ASF).

The plan sets a target of removing 19,000 wild boars in the first year and calls for training hunters, strengthening control and selection activities, coordinating hunting zones, private institutes and protected areas, and establishing a regional monitoring system for animal removals. It also demands a zero‑tolerance approach in high‑risk pig‑farming zones and the creation of a market for game meat. CIA president Nicola Sichetti warned, “Gli agricoltori sono esasperati e non possono continuare a pagare il prezzo dell’inerzia,” stressing the urgent need to protect crops and the regional swine industry from the health threat posed by ASF.
