African swine fever and economic impacts in Europe

Overview

By August 2026, the African swine fever (ASF) outbreak has intensified geographically and economically. Finland confirmed its first cases in wild boars in the Kymenlaakso region following the discovery of dead piglets in Virolahden. Genetic analysis by the Finnish Food Authority identified a genotype previously reported in Ukraine, the Baltic states, Poland, Italy, and Russia. Matti Nyberg, head of the veterinary services unit, noted findings suggest at least two separate herds, prompting authorities to prepare for an expanded core zone.

In Italy, while Tuscany remains the most affected region, the Province of Siena has implemented a preventive strategic plan to protect its livestock. However, the situation has escalated in the Lazio region. Following the discovery of a wild boar that tested positive in the municipality of Riano, authorities established a red zone. This development coincided with reports of wild boar sightings on the outskirts of Rome, including Prima Porta. Asl Roma 4 has deployed molecular dogs to search for further cases.

By early September, four confirmed cases were identified in Riano, prompting the Lazio regional crisis unit to activate strict containment measures. New ordinances in the Metropolitan City of Rome—covering Riano, Formello, Campagnano di Roma, and Monterotondo—include prohibitions on hunting, picnics, and public gatherings, alongside increased wild boar surveillance and farm inspections. These measures have raised logistical concerns regarding biosecurity protocols and food supply chain controls.

In Serbia, the impact remains severe, with 36,101 pigs reported dead or euthanized since the start of the year. In Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency reported an outbreak in the Varna region. In Hungary, a new outbreak in Somogy County affected approximately 1,850 pigs, leading to immediate culling. Meanwhile, economic pressures persist in Croatia, where farmers in Slavonia face significant losses.
