ASF spread & control intensify in Balkans and Italy
Overview
The African swine fever (ASF) crisis continues to expand across the Balkans and now draws heightened attention in Italy. In Serbia the virus remains active in seven districts covering 52 settlements, with roughly 28,000 pigs dead or euthanised and emergency zones maintained around Rum, Obrenovac, parts of Sremska Mitrovica and Šabac. Border controls and wildlife‑borne transmission checks are being tightened.
Croatia reports 89 infection sites and has now culled more than 60,000 pigs as protective and monitoring zones are extended in the eastern counties of Osijek‑Baranja and Virovitica‑Podravina. Compensation and bio‑security upgrades total €50.8 million, with fines imposed for illegal animal movements.
Neighbouring countries, including Hungary and Montenegro, continue coordinated surveillance and crisis‑team operations.
In Macedonia, the Agency of Food and Veterinary (AUV) disclosed extensive food‑product non‑compliance and issued an advisory urging pig farmers to adopt stricter bio‑security measures, citing the high regional ASF risk despite no local cases.
In Italy, the Abruzzo Farmers' Union has formally requested rapid implementation of Ordinance No. 5/2026 and the 2026‑2028 National Action Plan, targeting the removal of 19,000 wild boars in the first year, expanded hunter training, and a zero‑tolerance stance in high‑risk pig‑farming zones.
Regional authorities stress that ASF poses no risk to human health but continues to threaten pork production and market prices across the affected areas.
