Abruzzo launches maritime heritage network and traditional fishing events
A new community of practice has been established through the Network of Sea and Fishing Museums of Abruzzo to preserve the maritime memory and fishing traditions of the region. An agreement signed in Pescara involves the GAL Pesca Abruzzo, several municipalities including Martinsicuro, Tortoreto, Silvi, and Rocca San Giovanni, as well as various local foundations and FLAG organizations.
The initiative aims to create a shared cultural path by connecting several ecomuseums and maritime museums. The project focuses on sharing knowledge regarding local maritime traditions, fishing language, and culinary heritage to engage citizens, tourists, and schools.
In Falconara Marittima, efforts to revive maritime history include a demonstration of the ‘sciabica’ fishing technique. This ancient coastal method, involving a large net pulled from the sea by groups of people, will be reenacted at Rocca Mare to showcase the collective manual labor and historical practices once common to Adriatic coastal communities.
