Abruzzo Regional Council postpones Pescara merger to 2029
The Abruzzo Regional Council has postponed the establishment of the 'New Pescara' municipality to February 1, 2029. This decision delays the proposed merger of Pescara, Montesilvano, and Spoltore, which was originally targeted for 2027.
To move the process forward, regional councilors have committed to resubmitting the merger question to citizens through a new consultative referendum. Proponents argue that a decade has passed since the first referendum and that the administrative, social, and economic landscape has changed significantly, necessitating a fresh democratic mandate.
If the necessary administrative steps are not completed by September 2027, a commissioner will be appointed to the involved municipalities on January 1, 2028.
In the nearby Vasto region, discussions regarding a 'Grande Vasto'—a potential union involving Vasto, San Salvo, and other local municipalities—remain largely political. While a full merger faces similar hurdles of local autonomy and administrative resistance, observers suggest that immediate cooperation on services such as transportation and tourism could serve as a practical first step.
