Pescara municipal merger delays
Overview
The proposed merger of the municipalities of Pescara, Spoltore, and Montesilvano into the ‘Nuova Pescara’ project has faced significant delays due to regional political disagreements.
Initially, Regional Council President Lorenzo Sospiri proposed delaying the merger from January 1, 2027, to February 2029. This plan included establishing a merger office led by a single coordinator. The proposal faced criticism from Luca De Renzis of Fratelli d’Italia, who described the move as an uncoordinated “fuga in avanti” (flight forward).
The Abruzzo Regional Council ultimately decided to postpone the establishment of the new municipality to February 1, 2029. To facilitate the process, councilors intend to resubmit the merger question to the public via a new consultative referendum, citing the need for a fresh democratic mandate due to changes in the administrative and social landscape. If administrative requirements are not met by September 2027, a commissioner will be appointed to the involved municipalities on January 1, 2028.
