Italy labor market shows employment growth amid rising workplace accidents

Italy's labor market shows significant shifts according to recent data. ISTAT reports that as of July 2026, the number of employed persons reached 24.37 million, an increase of 307,000 compared to the previous year. The unemployment rate has fallen to 5.8%, while the employment rate stands at 63.2%. Notably, there has been a rise in permanent contracts, with 16.58 million workers on indefinite terms, alongside a decrease in temporary employment.

However, the Fratelli d'Italia party highlights these figures in a document detailing the Meloni government's four-year tenure, emphasizing increased stability and support for families through various bonuses and housing plans.

In contrast to the national economic growth, regional data from Abruzzo and Lazio indicate rising concerns regarding workplace safety. In Abruzzo, Uil Abruzzo reported a 3.58% increase in workplace accidents and an 8.25% rise in occupational diseases during the first half of 2026. Specifically, accidents occurring during commutes rose by 17.85%, and reports among female workers increased by 21.45%. In the Lazio region, Cgil reported that 28% of workplace accidents involve workers under the age of 35, with 8 fatalities recorded in the first half of the year.
