Italy workplace safety crisis deepens

Overview

The surge in occupational injuries and fatalities that marked early 2026 has continued to worsen. In Lazio, reported workplace injuries rose 8.2% in the first half of the year, reaching 23,605 cases, while deaths climbed 11.8% to 38, outpacing the national average. The increase affected all provinces, with Rome registering the highest absolute numbers and notable spikes among workers aged 20‑24 and 65‑69. Logistics, health and social assistance, construction and, unusually, artistic and entertainment sectors accounted for the bulk of reports. Nationally, Italy recorded 482 work‑related deaths from January to June 2026, a 4% decline from the same period in 2025 but still reflecting a high mortality rate of 14.5 deaths per million workers. Six regions – Calabria, Liguria, Sicily, Campania, Umbria and Puglia – were classified as “red‑zone” areas with mortality exceeding the national average by more than 25%. Lombardy reported the most on‑the‑job fatalities (53), followed by Veneto and Campania. Workers over 65 faced the steepest risk, and foreign employees remained disproportionately affected. The Vega Observatory’s August report confirmed the 482 fatalities, noting that 350 occurred on the job and 132 while commuting. While the total death count fell about 4% versus the same period in 2025, the downward trend is losing momentum, and overall injury reports rose 5.5%. Union leaders and safety observatories, including CGIL and the Vega Observatory, warned that the emergency persists and called for stronger prevention, inspection resources, and targeted training, especially for vulnerable age groups and high‑risk sectors. In early August, two serious accidents in Sicily revived these concerns. A 52‑year‑old construction worker fell three metres at a renovation site in Bolognetta, sustaining a fractured scapula and head injury, while a 55‑year‑old worker fell from a ladder in a wine cellar in Mazara del Vallo, suffering serious injuries.
