Italy continues to face a critical surge in occupational injuries and diseases. During the first seven months of 2026, total accident reports rose to 256,471, compared to 244,495 during the same period in 2025. In the Lazio region, the CGIL union has characterized the situation as an emergency. Analysis of INAIL records shows that accidents involving workers aged 16 to 34 have risen to 28% of the regional total, up from 22.8% in 2020. Notably, workplace fatalities among those under 35 in Lazio have doubled, with eight deaths reported in the first half of 2026 compared to four in the same period of 2025. The highest growth rate in this demographic was seen in the 16-19 age group at 12.9%. In the province of Latina, under-35s accounted for 29.8% of total accidents. Demographic trends indicate higher growth rates in accidents among female workers (+6.5%) and foreign workers (+8.0%) compared to Italian counterparts. Key sectors affected include healthcare and social assistance, commerce, transport, and construction. These safety concerns persist despite broader labor market shifts and previous warnings from the Vega Observatory regarding the loss of momentum in downward fatality trends. Recent data highlights specific regional crises. Sicily remains in a ‘red zone’ with a fatality index more than 25% higher than the national average; in Catania, five workers died during the first seven months of 2026.
