Abu Agila Masud Lockerbie bombing trial set for January

A US federal judge has scheduled the trial of Abu Agila Masud for January 19. Masud, a Libyan national in his mid-70s, is accused of constructing the bomb that destroyed Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie in 1988.

Judge Dabney Friedrich, presiding in Washington, DC, warned that she will not permit further postponements of the proceedings. The trial has faced multiple delays, including a recent setback in August following the disclosure of new evidence involving a single additional witness. These delays have caused significant distress for victims' families, many of whom are elderly.

Masud was extradited from Libya to the United States in 2022. He faces two counts of destruction of an aircraft resulting in death, which carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. While prosecutors claim Masud previously confessed to his role, his defense team has denied the charges and disputed the validity of any such confession.

The 1988 bombing killed all 259 passengers and crew on board the flight, as well as 11 people on the ground, making it the deadliest terrorist attack in UK history.
