Shortly before jury selection was scheduled to begin, the trial was postponed following the discovery of new evidence. Defense attorneys requested time to examine the information to meet “constitutional and ethical obligations,” noting that prosecutors disclosed the new information on a Saturday. Judge Friedrich cited the emergence of new evidence, including information located in other countries, and the complexity of the nearly 40-year-old case as reasons for the delay.

Following these delays, the trial has been officially rescheduled to begin on January 19, 2027. In October 2026, Judge Friedrich warned that she will not permit further postponements of the proceedings. The delays have reportedly caused significant distress for the families of victims, many of whom are elderly.

The 1988 bombing of the New York-bound aircraft over Lockerbie, Scotland, resulted in the deaths of 259 passengers and crew, as well as 11 people on the ground. Prosecutors allege the attack was carried out under the direction of former Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. Al-Marimi, who is in his mid-70s, faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.
