Abuja Earth Tremor Prompted Calm Assurance from Minister Dele Alake
A light seismic event struck Abuja on 4 August, with the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency’s Utako station recording a tremor at 11:23 a.m. that originated one kilometre deep and spread over four kilometres in five seconds. The agency classified the quake as I–II on the Mercalli intensity scale, indicating no danger to lives or property.
Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake, speaking from Washington, D.C., urged residents of the Federal Capital Territory to remain calm and continue daily activities. He ordered the NGSA to provide hourly updates on seismic activity and confirmed that security measures were already in place to protect the capital.
