Abuja seismic tremor and monitoring

Overview

On August 4, 2026, a light seismic event occurred in Abuja, Nigeria. The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) recorded the tremor at 11:23 a.m., noting it originated at a depth of less than one kilometre and lasted approximately five seconds. The event was classified as I–II on the Mercalli intensity scale.

Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake urged residents to remain calm and requested hourly updates from the NGSA. Following the event, the NGSA conducted physical assessments in areas such as the Central Business District and NNPC Towers, reporting no injuries or structural damage. NGSA Director-General Prof. Olusegun Ige described the tremor as a ‘low-energy, transient micro-event’ and stated that seismic activity has subsided.

While officials maintain there is no ongoing threat, some experts have suggested the phenomenon may be linked to increased borehole drilling, illegal mining, and quarrying activities within the Federal Capital Territory.
