Abuse and forced desertions reported at Hecelchakán Rural Normal School in Campeche

More than 15 new students have left the Benemérita Escuela Normal Rural “Justo Sierra Méndez” in Hecelchakán, Campeche, after reporting harassing initiation rituals and humiliating treatment by senior students. Allegations include confiscation of personal items such as hats, sunscreen and mosquito repellent, unsanitary living conditions, limited rest periods and requirements to keep their heads down. One student who ranked seventh in the admission exam quit, citing threats of ongoing humiliation. Victims say they were forced to sign documents surrendering their places and were prohibited from cleaning their quarters. The incidents have prompted calls for immediate intervention by the school director and the state education secretariat (SEDUC). Local media Tele‑Mar Campeche highlighted the report and urged authorities to investigate and ensure a safe, respectful environment for future teachers.
