Hazing investigations at Mexican rural teacher schools

In late July 2026, reports surfaced of abusive initiation practices at two rural teacher‑training schools in Mexico. On July 24, students at the Benemérita Escuela Normal Rural “Justo Sierra Méndez” in Hecelchakán, Campeche, described harassment, forced desertions, confiscation of personal items and unsanitary living conditions, prompting calls for intervention by the school director and the state education secretariat.

Four days later, parents of new entrants at the Escuela Normal Rural Mactumactzá in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, exposed a traditional “novatada” that denied food, water, sleep and bathroom use, leading to an 18‑year‑old’s kidney infection, surgeries and hospitalization. The incident sparked protests demanding action from education authorities and recalled a 2018 death at the same institution.

On July 28, Chiapas prosecutors announced a formal investigation after five complaints were filed. A multidisciplinary team will examine the case files, and officials pledged “no impunity.” Roughly 70 new students are said to have left the school, while about 20 others reported severe dehydration and exhaustion. Demonstrators gathered outside the state government building, demanding inspections and the right of withdrawn students to retain enrollment.
