Academy Award submissions begin for 2027 Best International Feature

Submissions are underway for the Best International Feature category at the 99th Academy Awards, scheduled for March 14, 2027. To qualify, films must be feature-length, produced outside the United States, and feature predominantly non-English dialogue. A new rule allows films that win qualifying awards at select festivals, such as Cannes, Venice, or Sundance, to become eligible.

Early entries include Canada’s ‘Nina Roza’ and Germany’s ‘Everytime’. Belgium has submitted ‘Coward’, directed by Lukas Dhont, which premiered at Cannes. South Korea has selected ‘Possible Love’ by Lee Chang-dong, a film set to compete at the Venice Film Festival. Other early contenders include the Dominican Republic’s ‘Melodrama’ and Austria’s ‘Rose’.

The Academy is expected to announce a shortlist of 15 finalists on December 15, 2026, followed by the final five nominees on January 21, 2027.
