Acatlán de Osorio mayor and council members resign amid investigations
The mayor and most members of the Acatlán de Osorio municipal council have submitted their resignations, but local authorities state this will not halt ongoing legal investigations. The resignations include Mayor Guadalupe Lucero Bárcenas, the municipal trustee, and seven council members, leaving only one councilman, Jesús Reyes Ramírez, who did not resign.
Julio Huerta, president of the local Congress's Governance Commission, clarified that while the resignation process is being reviewed, investigations by the State Superior Auditor (ASE) and the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) regarding municipal threats and requested audits will continue. The resignations must be voted on by the local Congress following a hearing scheduled for September 10.
Legislative leaders have also addressed allegations regarding potential links between municipal officials and the criminal group ‘Los Rojos’. Pável Gaspar, president of the legislature, stated that the Congress will not yield to pressure to dissolve the council prematurely. Instead, officials will present evidence during the upcoming hearings to determine if any members are unfit to remain in office due to criminal affiliations.
