Accell Group enters bankruptcy, threatening major bicycle brands

The Accell Group, Europe’s largest bicycle manufacturer by volume, has entered bankruptcy proceedings in an Amsterdam court. The group’s decline follows a 2022 acquisition by American investment firms KKR and Teslin for approximately 1.56 billion euros, which left the company with significant debt.

Several factors contributed to the financial crisis, including a post-pandemic market collapse that resulted in massive unsold inventory, rising interest rates, and costly product recalls, specifically regarding Babboe cargo bikes. Although restructuring efforts reduced debt to roughly 800 million euros by spring 2026, the financial burden became unsustainable.

The bankruptcy threatens several major brands, including the French manufacturer Cycles Lapierre, which filed for bankruptcy on August 5, 2026, and is currently seeking a buyer. Other French cycling brands, such as Solex, Gitane, and Peugeot Cycles, are also facing difficulties.
