Accell Group declared insolvent by Dutch court
The Accell Group, one of Europe’s largest bicycle manufacturers, has been declared insolvent by a court in Amsterdam. The Dutch conglomerate, which owns prominent brands such as Batavus, Sparta, Koga, Haibike, Ghost, Lapierre, and Raleigh, faces significant uncertainty following a post-pandemic market shift.
The company’s downfall is attributed to a combination of factors, including supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, a subsequent drop in consumer demand, and high levels of unsold inventory. Additionally, the group faced challenges from a large-scale recall of Babboe cargo bikes.
Accell Group, which was acquired by the American investment firm KKR in 2022 for approximately €1.56 billion, currently employs around 2,000 people across 15 countries. The insolvency has already impacted operations, with production reportedly halted at a facility in Hungary.
In response to the crisis, Mel Sutcliffe and the Dublin-based firm Quanta Capital have launched a bid to acquire the group, aiming to stabilize the manufacturer and preserve its collection of well-known cycling brands.
