Accell Group declares insolvency following failed takeover
The Accell Group, a major Dutch bicycle conglomerate, has declared insolvency after a failed takeover attempt by Dutech Holdings and Tri Star Group. The company has applied for a suspension of payments in the Netherlands due to high inventory levels, declining sales following the pandemic-era boom, and liquidity issues exacerbated by significant product recalls at its Babboe brand.
Several German subsidiaries have filed for insolvency under self-administration, including Winora Staiger GmbH, Ghost-Bikes GmbH, and Engelbert Wiener Bike Parts GmbH, alongside Accell Germany GmbH. This move aims to maintain operations and restructure the business while seeking new investors. Approximately 370 employees in Germany are directly affected by these filings.
CEO Jonas Nilsson described the situation as "deeply sad and frustrating," noting that despite extensive efforts, a viable solution to continue operations in the group's current form could not be found. The insolvency arrives during a critical ordering season for retailers, creating significant uncertainty for dealers who rely on brands such as Haibike, Ghost, Winora, and Babboe.
