Accell Group enters Dutch insolvency, endangering major bike brands

The Netherlands‑based Accell Group, the parent of bicycle brands such as Raleigh, Haibike, Ghost, Lapierre, Winora, Batavus and others, has been granted a suspension of payments by a Dutch court, effectively entering insolvency proceedings. CEO Jonas Nilsson said the company had "exhausted all realistic options" and described the situation as "deeply sad and frustrating".

Accell was acquired by private‑equity firm KKR in 2022 for roughly €1.8 billion during the pandemic‑driven e‑bike boom. After lockdowns ended, demand fell sharply, leaving the group with excess inventory, squeezed margins and mounting debt. Multiple restructurings and a €300 million shareholder loan from KKR failed to stabilise the business. A potential sale to Singapore‑based Dutech Group, cleared by German competition authorities, never materialised.

The insolvency process provides temporary protection from creditors while administrators seek a solution, which could include asset sales or liquidation. Accell employs about 3,700 people across 15 countries, with production largely shifted to Hungary and France. The future of its many brands remains uncertain.
