Accessibility Initiatives Launch for Disabled Residents in La Gomera and Cádiz

Provivienda has begun work on the "Gomera Accesible" programme in La Gomera, aiming to adapt the homes of elderly people and individuals with functional diversity. The 2024 phase will modify 30 dwellings—installing shower trays, widening doorways, adding handrails and ramps—bringing the total to 52 homes since the scheme started. Funding of €350,000 comes from the Cabildo Insular de La Gomera and the Government of the Canary Islands, and the programme also provides individualized social support to prevent isolation and institutionalisation. Director Fernando Rodríguez notes that more than 80 % of the impact is direct improvement of participants' living conditions.

In Valdelagrana, Cádiz, the association La Gaviota has relaunched its free "Hidrosport" initiative, offering adapted beach access and hydrotherapy for people with physical disabilities, reduced mobility or seniors. Running from 1 July to 31 August, the service operates daily from 11:00 to 15:00 at a specially equipped beach module, with an adapted van for transport. The programme is supported by the municipal council, Innovia Coptalia, CaixaBank, the Diputación de Cádiz, FEGADI and volunteers, and is staffed by a technical team plus additional helpers. Its goal is to enhance participants' physical, emotional and social wellbeing through safe, accessible hydrotherapy.
