Accra Coconut Vendor Fined GH¢360 for Illegal Dumping
Prince Nyame, a coconut seller in Accra, was convicted by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Sanitation Court after pleading guilty to dumping coconut husks into a public drain behind Accra Academy in the Bubuashie area. The court imposed a fine of 30 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢360, and warned that failure to pay could result in a three‑month prison term.
Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey said the practice contributes to blocked drains, flooding and poor sanitation in the capital. He urged vendors to store waste properly and use licensed waste‑management services, and announced that the AMA will step up monitoring and enforcement. Residents were asked to report illegal dumping to help keep the city clean.
