Accra coconut vendor crackdown

Overview

In late July 2026 Accra’s mayor ordered the arrest of a 46‑year‑old coconut trader who had turned a city bus stop into an unauthorised storage and retail space, violating the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s hawker‑bylaw. The mayor highlighted how such practices disrupt public transport and create sanitation problems.

A few days later, a different coconut seller was convicted in the AMA Sanitation Court for dumping coconut husks into a public drain. He was fined GH¢360 and warned of possible imprisonment for non‑payment. The mayor reiterated the need for proper waste handling and announced intensified monitoring of street vendors.

Together the incidents illustrate a tightening of enforcement by Accra authorities against informal coconut trading that obstructs public spaces and contributes to drainage blockages.
