Accra High Court adjourns high-profile trials pending Supreme Court ruling

The Accra High Court has adjourned two high-profile criminal trials to August 25, 2026, pending a Supreme Court ruling on an injunction application. The application challenges the legality of conducting substantive criminal trials during the judiciary’s legal vacation.

One case involves Kwabena Adu-Boahene, the former National Signals Bureau Director, and his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng. The second case involves Hanan Abdul-Wahab, the former Chief Executive Officer of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), and his wife, Faiza Seidu Wuni.

Defence lawyers have petitioned the Supreme Court, arguing that the Chief Justice’s directive allowing selected criminal trials to proceed during the vacation period is irregular and inconsistent with the Constitution. They contend that judges sitting during the vacation should only handle motions and interlocutory matters rather than full trials. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the injunction application on August 20, 2026.
