Accra Metropolitan Assembly schedules August 1 sanitation clean‑up, warns of enforcement

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) announced that the August edition of National Sanitation Day will be held on Saturday, 1 August 2026, from 6:00 a.m. to noon across Accra. The clean‑up will cover all sub‑metros, electoral areas, markets, lorry parks, business districts and residential communities, focusing on desilting drains, clearing blocked gutters and waterways, sweeping streets and public spaces, and removing accumulated refuse.

Traders, shop owners, market stall operators, transport operators and other business operators are instructed to suspend all trading activities during the exercise. The AMA warned that individuals who ignore the directive, continue trading, or obstruct sanitation officers may be arrested, fined, prosecuted in the sanitation court or sanctioned under the assembly’s bye‑laws. The exercise is part of AMA’s effort to improve environmental sanitation, reduce flooding risk and protect public health in the capital.
