Accra Sports Stadium closure forces Hearts of Oak to relocate home matches
The Accra Sports Stadium has been closed to club football to allow for pitch improvements required by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The National Sports Authority (NSA) confirmed the facility will remain unavailable for Ghana Premier League matches until after the Black Stars host The Gambia in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
As a result, Hearts of Oak has arranged to play its Matchday 1 and Matchday 3 home fixtures at the University of Ghana Stadium. The club is scheduled to host Berekum Chelsea on September 6, 2026, followed by Bechem United.
The closure has highlighted ongoing concerns regarding the maintenance of sporting facilities in Ghana. Member of Parliament Dickson Kyere-Duah warned that the deteriorating condition of the stadium could jeopardize Ghana’s ability to host international matches if urgent reconstruction or repairs are not addressed.
