Accra Sports Stadium safety and infrastructure concerns

The Accra Sports Stadium in Ghana continues to face scrutiny regarding its structural integrity. Following an inspection, the National Sports Authority (NSA) described the facility as a “death trap,” warning that its deterioration could cause a major disaster during high-capacity events. While the stadium remains an approved venue for Confederation of African Football (CAF) events, officials have suggested that complete redevelopment or demolition may be necessary.

Concerns have escalated to include the potential loss of international goodwill. Member of Parliament Dickson Kyere-Duah warned that the deteriorating condition risks jeopardizing Ghana’s standing with CAF, noting that the organization has previously been “charitable” by allowing matches to proceed despite safety issues.

Currently, the stadium is closed for pitch rehabilitation to meet CAF requirements. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has expressed confidence that Greengrass Technologies will complete these repairs in time for the Black Stars to host The Gambia in an AFCON 2027 qualifier on September 27. The stadium remains the only approved venue in the country for international matches, making the ongoing maintenance critical for the national team’s qualifying campaign.

In response to broader sporting infrastructure challenges, President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to construct 10 new multi-purpose stadia across various regions. Beyond infrastructure, the President has met with top football clubs to address the declining quality of the domestic league, emphasizing the need to revive the defunct Colts League for grassroots development and preventing the premature sale of young talent. Additionally, the President highlighted the establishment of a Sports Development Fund to support Ghanaian clubs competing in continental tournaments.
