Accra waste crackdown sees arrests and market clean‑up
The Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly arrested a 45‑year‑old waakye seller, Muniratu Akangbe, and a 20‑year‑old, Rakibetu Asuman, for dumping refuse at the Dzorwolo Bus Stop. Both were fined under municipal bye‑laws—GH₵2,000 for the adult and GH₵1,000 for the minor—and were ordered to sweep the area.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly deployed a waste‑management truck to the entrance of Kaneshie Market on June 26 to clear an overflowing heap of refuse that had raised health concerns among traders and residents. The intervention temporarily restored cleanliness while traders called for a more sustainable waste‑collection system to prevent future hazards.
