Accra water supply disrupted by burst major pipeline
A major 500mm-diameter water trunk main in western Accra has burst, cutting off the water supply to eight densely populated communities. The damage occurred during excavation work by AWERCO Construction Ltd, which was digging underground storm drains between Kaneshie First Light and Hansonic Junction.
The burst caused significant flooding within the construction trench, preventing Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) engineers from immediately accessing the damaged section of the pipe. Technical teams are currently performing dewatering operations to pump water out of the trench to expose the break.
The affected areas include Mallam, Darkuman, Kaneshie, Mataheko, Korle Bu, Mamprobi, Dansoman Township, and Chorkor. While preparatory repair work has commenced at one end of the damaged section, GWL has not yet provided an estimated timeline for the full restoration of water services.
