Ghanaian leader questions US$4bn public funding for Accra–Kumasi Expressway
Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, leader of the United Party, has challenged the Ghanaian government’s plan to use US$4 billion in public funds for the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway. Kyerematen argues that the project, which is expected to be a tollable road, should instead be financed through private-sector participation, such as Build-Operate-Transfer models, to avoid placing a heavy financial burden on the state.
The government, under President John Dramani Mahama, intends to fund the 198.7-kilometre project using domestic resources without external borrowing. President Mahama has indicated that US$2 billion has already been set aside, with the full amount expected to be mobilized by the end of 2026. Proponents state the expressway will reduce travel time to approximately two hours and create thousands of jobs.
In a separate economic development context, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has urged businesses to invest with confidence, citing macroeconomic stability. He noted that the 2027 Budget will focus on a blueprint for economic transformation. Additionally, Kyerematen has called for increased investment in Ghana’s tourism sector to leverage the country’s UNESCO World Heritage sites and natural resources.
