Accrington crackdown leads to seizure of illicit tobacco and medication

Trading Standards officers from Lancashire County Council and Lancashire Constabulary conducted a joint crackdown in Accrington town centre, resulting in the seizure of various illegal goods.

During inspections of several retail premises, officers seized illicit cigarettes and hand-rolling tobacco valued at approximately £2,670, along with vaping products worth around £1,670. Additionally, authorities removed prescription-only medications that were being held unlawfully and confiscated fireworks that had been stored in an unsafe manner.

Officials stated that the operation aims to tackle the illegal tobacco trade, which undercuts legitimate businesses and fuels criminal activity. Concerns were also raised regarding the suspected sale of single cigarettes, a practice that increases accessibility for children and young people.
