ACEA data shows rising electric commercial vehicle market share in EU

Electric-powered commercial vehicles are gaining traction in Europe. According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), new registrations for vans, trucks, and buses with externally rechargeable drives saw double-digit growth during the first nine months of 2026.

Light commercial vehicles (up to 3.5 tons) saw registrations of electric and plug-in hybrid models rise by 38.2 percent to nearly 152,000 units, increasing their market share from 10.2 to 14.1 percent. Despite this growth, diesel remains the dominant power source with a 78.1 percent market share.

In the heavy vehicle segment (over 3.5 tons), rechargeable registrations increased by nearly 50 percent to approximately 12,900 units, bringing the market share to 5.3 percent. There are significant variations based on weight: medium-duty trucks (up to 16 tons) now see electric drives in nearly one out of every five new vehicles, whereas heavy-duty trucks (over 16 tons) hold a market share of only 2.5 percent despite a nearly 60 percent increase in registrations.
