European electric vehicle market trends

Overview

Data from late 2026 indicates a growing presence of electric vehicles across European markets. In the European Union, ACEA reported that new registrations for electric vans, trucks, and buses saw double-digit growth during the first nine months of the year. While diesel remains the dominant power source for commercial vehicles, light commercial vehicle market share for electric and plug-in hybrid models rose to 14.1 percent.

In Portugal, the transition appears more pronounced in the passenger car segment. According to ACAP, battery electric vehicles accounted for 30.3 percent of registrations between January and October, a 50.5 percent increase over the previous year. By October, electric motorizations reached 44.9 percent of the new passenger car market. Tesla was identified as the top-selling battery electric brand in the Portuguese market.
