Greece and Israel have signed a defense agreement valued at approximately €3.035 billion for the development and deployment of the Achilles Shield, a multilayered air defense system. The system is designed to protect against a wide range of threats, including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, aircraft, and drones. It will integrate Israeli technologies such as David’s Sling, BARAK MX, and SPYDER, alongside ELM-2084 radars, into a unified command-and-control network.

To ensure strategic autonomy, the Israeli Ministry of Defense confirmed that the central command-and-control software and its source code will remain under exclusive Greek control. This arrangement includes the transfer of Israeli expertise and technology to nineteen Greek companies participating in the project, which collectively hold a share exceeding 25 percent. The system is expected to be fully operational within 35 months.

The agreement comes amid heightened regional tensions in the Mediterranean and Eastern Aegean, particularly involving Turkey. While the United States has expressed support for the cooperation, citing shared security goals, some European lawmakers have raised concerns that increasing reliance on Israeli defense technology could create a new dependency for the EU as it seeks to reduce its reliance on the United States.
