Aci Castello sewage discharge dispute triggers regional inquiry

The mayor of Aci Castello sent a formal warning to the extraordinary commissioner of the neighbouring municipality of Aci Catena, demanding an urgent verification of private sewer connections and any illegal discharges into the streams that flow into Aci Castello. Regional deputy Santo Primavera, representing the Mpa‑Grande Sicilia group, submitted a written urgent question to the President of the Sicily Region and the assessors for Territory, Environment and Energy. The inquiry asks for official ARPA or ASP reports, sampling data, and inspection results that can confirm the source of pollutants, and it requests details on the extraordinary surveillance plan, the number of inspections carried out since June 2022, and the status of missing sewer networks in the area. Primavera criticised the lack of prior institutional dialogue before the mayor’s accusations and called for immediate provision of any relevant evidence to the competent authorities.
