Sicily sewage discharge and water quality controversy

In late July 2026 the mayor of Aci Castello formally warned the extraordinary commissioner of neighboring Aci Catena, demanding an urgent check of private sewer connections and alleged illegal discharges into streams that flow into Aci Castello. The request prompted a regional deputy, Santo Primavera, to ask the Sicily regional government for ARPA/ASP reports, sampling data and inspection results, and to criticize the lack of prior institutional dialogue.

A few days later, regional deputy Carlo Auteri raised broader concerns about water quality in the area slated for the new Iblei National Park. Citing a Sicilian Basin Authority report, he highlighted urban discharges into the Anapo River, inadequate wastewater treatment in mountain municipalities, insufficient monitoring and ongoing hydro‑geological risks. Auteri called for verification of discharge permits, assessment of treatment system efficiency and remedial measures before final park decisions, extending the focus from a single municipal dispute to a regional environmental scrutiny.
