Acinetobacter baumannii strains in pets match those infecting humans
Scientists from Nanjing Agricultural University, Wuhu Institute of Technology and Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine published a study in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology showing a high genetic similarity between Acinetobacter baumannii isolates from companion animals and human patients. The analysis covered 509 bacterial samples taken from 33 animal species in 17 countries. Strains recovered from dogs, cats and horses were more than 99 % identical to hospital‑derived human isolates, and they carried carbapenem‑resistance genes that were absent in samples from livestock, poultry and wildlife.
The World Health Organization classifies A. baumannii as a critical‑priority pathogen because of its extensive drug resistance. The researchers note that close daily contact between pet owners and their animals could facilitate bacterial exchange, but the direction of transmission remains undefined.
These findings suggest that domestic pets may act as a reservoir for highly resistant strains of A. baumannii, raising concerns for public‑health surveillance and infection‑control strategies.
