Acinetobacter baumannii resistance and pet reservoirs

Entities: World Health Organization · cats · Acinetobacter baumannii · Wuhu Institute of Technology · Nanjing Agricultural University

Overview

The international consortium led by the University of East Anglia has documented a stepwise accumulation of resistance genes in Acinetobacter baumannii, identifying four major global lineages with the oxa23-carrying lineage now dominant in clinical isolates. Continued surveillance across six continents has underscored the pathogen’s status as a WHO‑listed critical priority.

A July 2026 study by researchers in China expands the picture by showing that companion‑animal isolates are >99 % genetically identical to human hospital strains and share the same carbapenem‑resistance genes. Sampling 509 isolates from 33 pet species in 17 countries revealed that dogs, cats and horses harbor strains matching those causing human infections, while livestock, poultry and wildlife did not. The direction of transmission remains unclear, but the findings suggest domestic pets could act as a reservoir for highly resistant A. baumannii.

Together, these data highlight the bacterium’s capacity for rapid global spread, gene acquisition, and cross‑species transmission. They reinforce calls for integrated One‑Health surveillance, stricter infection‑control measures, and accelerated research into novel therapeutics and stewardship policies.
