Acre, Brazil confronts ICU bed shortages amid hospital overload

The State Doctors' Union (Sindmed‑AC) inspected the Intensive Care Unit at the Instituto Nacional de Traumatologia e Ortopedia (INTO) and found that staffing gaps and supply shortages forced the unit to reduce its operational beds from 17 to 10. The report highlighted chronic failures in medical, physiotherapy and nursing schedules, shortages of antibiotics, linens and imaging equipment, and unclear administrative responsibilities between the state health secretary and the state hospital foundation.

Data released by the Acre State Health Secretariat showed that every public ICU in the state was nearly full, with only one or three vacant beds out of 10‑20 available in each facility. The situation coincides with a continued alert for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SRAG), as Acre remains among the states with the highest recent incidence.
