Brazil intensifies measles surveillance and vaccination

Overview

Following a surge in respiratory viruses in early 2026, Brazil’s health authorities shifted focus toward a measles resurgence in August. While the National Multivaccination Campaign administered over 8 million doses, localized outbreaks emerged in São Paulo and the Amazonas state.

By early October 2026, Brazil recorded 52 imported measles cases, with 41 in São Paulo, 10 in Amazonas, and one in Rio de Janeiro. Despite these imports, authorities emphasize that Brazil maintains its status as a country free from endemic measles circulation, a certification regained in November 2024. This monitoring follows a broader regional increase in cases across the Americas, including significant outbreaks in the United States, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, and Canada. To mitigate risks, Brazilian health teams are conducting active case searches, epidemiological investigations, and contact tracing.

In response to the measles threat and incomplete vaccination records, regional vaccination initiatives have been launched. In São Paulo, the State Health Secretariat is providing free yellow fever, influenza, and triple viral vaccines at the National Sanctuary of Our Lady of Aparecida to reach pilgrims. Additionally, in Sorriso, a multi-vaccination campaign for children and adolescents is underway through late November, offering 18 different vaccines to improve immunization coverage.
