Brazil health response expands amid measles and West Nile
Overview
Following the Pan American Health Organization’s warning of a Southern‑Hemisphere respiratory virus surge, Brazil’s health authorities intensified surveillance and vaccination efforts throughout the 2026 winter. Early measures included the rollout of the 20‑valent pneumococcal vaccine (Pneumo 20), seasonal influenza shots, a maternal RSV vaccine, and nirsevimab for infants. Data from the first half of 2026 show that the universal health system (SUS) achieved roughly 90% coverage of the maternal RSV vaccine, reducing severe acute respiratory syndrome (SRAG) hospitalisations in infants under six months by 52%.
In August 2026, focus shifted toward a measles resurgence. The Ministry of Health launched the 2026 National Multivaccination Campaign on 3 August, which has since concluded after administering over 8 million doses nationwide. By early September, the measles situation expanded. In São Paulo, the annual confirmed case count rose to 32, with 29 cases located in the capital and others in Guarulhos and São Bernardo do Campo. Among these, health officials noted cases involving an infant with an incomplete vaccination schedule and a 28-year-old who had previously been vaccinated.
In the Amazonas state, three imported cases involving Peruvian nationals from Alto Monte were confirmed in the border municipality of Tabatinga. In response, the Manaus Municipal Health Secretariat issued an epidemiological alert to prevent local circulation, noting that Manaus has not seen an autochthonous case since 2018. The Ministry of Health plans to deploy support teams to Tabatinga and Carauari on 21 September to investigate cases and implement vaccine blocking. This follows broader outbreaks across the Americas, where the Pan American Health Organization reports nearly 48,000 confirmed cases and 44 deaths.
