Acre, Brazil, sees massive surge in wildfire heat spots

The Brazilian state of Acre is experiencing a sharp acceleration in wildfires, with a significant surge in heat spots recorded in late August. Data from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) shows that 173 heat spots were identified in just two days between August 27 and 28, accounting for over 42% of the state's total occurrences for the year.

August has become the most critical month so far in 2026, representing approximately 76% of all recorded heat spots in the state. This marks a dramatic shift from the beginning of the year, where monthly counts were significantly lower. The spike on August 28 alone was the highest single-day record for the year, more than tripling the previous record.

Authorities have warned that the situation remains critical as the region approaches September, which historically sees the highest average of wildfires. A state decree issued in July has already called for intensified prevention, monitoring, and combat efforts involving the Fire Department and federal agencies to mitigate risks of respiratory crises and environmental damage.
