Brazil expands fire bans and prevention
Entities: Marcos Berti · Tocantins · Rondônia · Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development (SEMAD) · State of Goiás
Overview
Brazil’s dry‑season fire‑prevention drive, launched in early July 2026, continues to broaden bans and community actions. On 28 July the Instituto Natureza do Tocantins (Naturatins) confirmed the suspension of all new and existing controlled‑burn permits until 31 October, urging residents to avoid open flames, campfires, cigarette butts and waste burning, and to report any hotspots immediately to brigade 193.
In Porto Velho, Rondônia, an integrated task‑force of trained brigadists, led by superintendent Marcos Berti and field officer Marcelo Vasconcelos, monitors high‑risk zones, intervenes quickly on emerging fires and protects homes and wildlife, warning that a projected Super El Niño could worsen drought.
Municipal campaigns advanced on 29 July. Campo Grande’s “Agosto Alaranjado 2026 – Diga Não às Queimadas Urbanas” campaign, coordinated by COMIF and environmental engineer Letícia Urano, provides hotlines (156, 153) and a mobile app for reporting. In Cuiabá, the “Juntos por uma Cuiabá Sem Queimadas” operation adds staff, water‑trucks and equipment. Rondonópolis formalized a mixed‑brigade partnership, adding five municipal responders and training six indigenous firefighters to protect the Tadarimana Indigenous Land during the severe drought.
