Overview

Brazil’s dry-season fire and heat crisis continues to intensify through late October 2026, driven by a powerful El Niño event. In the Amazon, fire outbreaks surged significantly; September saw a 74.2% increase in outbreaks compared to 2025. In Amazonas, 2026 fire counts reached over 3,000, triple the 2025 total. While October hotspots showed a 74% decrease, smoke from the Lower Amazonas and Pará continues to cause health issues and school suspensions in Manaus.

In response to the crisis, the federal government approved R$ 45.2 million for 47 humanitarian assistance plans in Amazonas, where a task force of 18 aircraft has deployed 3.2 million liters of water over two weeks.
