Active mobility trends rise in Brazil during World Car Free Day
In observance of World Car Free Day, initiatives in Brazil are promoting active mobility to reduce reliance on motorized vehicles. In the Distrito Federal, the NGO Rodas da Paz is advocating for 'more human cities' through improved cycling infrastructure, better lighting, and signage, alongside measures to discourage car use such as stricter parking fees and traffic enforcement.
Research indicates a shifting trend among Generation Z, who are increasingly adopting bicycles, walking, and electric scooters for urban travel. A study by Questtonó suggests young people view active mobility as a way to explore cities with greater autonomy. This shift is driven by heavy traffic, high costs, and flexible work routines. Additionally, the micromobility company Whoosh reported reaching 10 million trips in Brazil, noting a significant increase in short-distance travel during peak hours.
