Brazil tourism surge and electric mobility expansion

Overview

Brazil's tourism sector continues to reach historic milestones in 2026. International arrivals are on track to hit 10 million by year-end, bolstered by a 19.4% rise in Q1 2026. Major growth is seen in Rio de Janeiro, where foreign arrivals rose 18.1% in early 2026, and in Northeast hubs like Recife and Rio Grande do Norte. The government is actively targeting the Chinese market through Mandarin-language investment guides and visa-waiver programs. Cultural and sporting events are driving significant economic activity, including the Rock in Rio festival and upcoming NFL and FIFA World Cup matches. Niche tourism, such as Afro-tourism and gastronomic tours, is also expanding. In the southern region, Gramado reported 5.6 million overnight stays during the first half of 2026. Tourism movement in Gramado strengthened from March onward, with unique visitors increasing by an average of 13.6% per month between February and May. May saw 436,000 visitors, while the peak day on June 6 during Corpus Christi recorded 112,943 unique visitors. Between 55% and 59% of these visitors stayed overnight. Domestic travel remains robust, though rising jet-fuel costs have increased airfares. Concurrently, the electric mobility sector is accelerating. Brazil's electric-bus fleet saw a 92.5% year-on-year increase in the first half of 2026. The number of electric bicycles, self-propelled vehicles, and mopeds in circulation has increased 37-fold since 2016, reaching 284,000 in 2024. This surge has prompted discussions regarding safety and regulation by the National Transit Council (Contran). In São Paulo, the Shimano Fest 2026 is hosting the 1st Symposium of Active Mobility, Sport, Cycle Tourism, and Entrepreneurship to address urban planning and sustainability. The broader electric mobility market is also expanding through new retail logistics and infrastructure; the startup Voltrix is organizing collective buying groups for micromobility retailers.
