Activists and journalist face legal charges in Singapore and Hong Kong

Authorities in Singapore and Hong Kong have taken legal action against activists and journalists, raising concerns regarding freedom of expression and press liberty in the region.

In Singapore, the government has charged 14 activists under the Public Order Act for various peaceful expressions. The charges involve activities related to pro-Palestinian activism and calls for the abolition of the death penalty, including candlelight vigils outside Changi prison and an assembly near the State Courts. Critics argue these prosecutions contradict Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s stated goal of fostering a more participatory society.

In Hong Kong, police arrested independent journalist Tang Ho-wing and activist Lee Ying-chi under the city’s 2024 national security law. The arrests are linked to an incident outside the Prince Edward metro station where individuals were allegedly shouting “seditious slogans.” This marks the first publicly known instance of a journalist being arrested for sedition under Hong Kong’s homegrown security legislation.
